Introduction

Welcome to Orator (https://orator.gg, the “Site”), operated by Orator (“Orator,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use and share it, and your choices. It applies to the Site and related services, including matchmaking, live debates, rankings, browser and installed-app notifications, and AI-assisted features (collectively, the “Services”).

This Privacy Policy is incorporated into our Terms of Service. By using the Services, you agree to the practices described here. If you do not agree, please do not use the Services.

For deletion requests or privacy questions, contact privacy@orator.gg.

1. Personal information we collect

“Personal information” means information that identifies, relates to, or could reasonably be linked with you. We collect:

Information you provide

  • Account data — when you sign in (for example via Clerk), we receive identifiers and profile fields such as name, email address, username, and profile image, as configured in your authentication provider.
  • Notification preferences — how you asked us to reach you at queue time (for example instant alerts vs keeping the tab open), and push subscription endpoints when you enable browser or installed-app notifications.
  • Debate content — arguments, prep notes you enter, cross-examination or live transcripts, forfeits, and related metadata from debates you join.
  • Communications — messages you send us (for example support or privacy requests).

Information collected automatically

  • Usage and device data — pages viewed, features used, approximate location derived from IP, browser type, operating system, and similar technical logs.
  • Live session data — when you join a live debate, we and our real-time providers may process audio streams and generate transcripts for cross-examination and judging.
  • Cookies and similar technologies — session and preference cookies necessary to keep you signed in and operate the Site. See your browser settings to limit cookies.
  • Diagnostics — error and performance data (for example through Sentry) to fix bugs and improve reliability.

Information from third parties

We receive information from service providers that help us run the Services (authentication, hosting, push delivery, real-time audio, and AI APIs). They process data according to their policies and our agreements with them.

2. How we use personal information

We use personal information to:

  • Provide, maintain, and improve the Services.
  • Match you with opponents, run live rounds, compute rankings (including Elo), and deliver AI-generated verdicts and topic primers.
  • Send match and live-round notifications when you opt in (browser push, installed-app push, or in-tab alerts).
  • Authenticate you, secure accounts, detect abuse, and enforce our Terms.
  • Analyze usage, debug issues, and develop new features.
  • Comply with law and respond to lawful requests.
  • Communicate with you about the Services (for example service-related email from your auth provider or us).

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use notification endpoints or debate content for third-party advertising.

3. Sharing and disclosure

We may share personal information with:

  • Service providers — vendors that host our backend (for example Convex), authenticate users (Clerk), deliver push notifications, provide real-time audio (Daily.co), run AI models (for example Vercel AI Gateway), and monitor errors (Sentry), only as needed to perform services for us.
  • Other users — during a debate, your display name, arguments, transcripts, and outcomes may be visible to your opponent and reflected in shared debate state.
  • Legal and safety — when we believe disclosure is required by law or necessary to protect rights, safety, and integrity of the Services.
  • Business transfers — in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, subject to standard confidentiality obligations.

4. Your choices

Account and profile. You can update certain profile fields through your account provider. You can change how we reach you before joining the match queue, and revoke browser or installed-app notification permission in your device settings.

Push notifications. Match and live-round alerts are transactional and relate to debates you use. You may stop them by revoking notification permission or choosing a keep-tab-open reach option when you queue.

Deletion. To request deletion of your account and associated personal information, email privacy@orator.gg from the address linked to your account. We may retain limited information where required by law or for legitimate business purposes (for example fraud prevention or dispute records).

Marketing. We do not send promotional email as a core product feature; if that changes, we will offer an unsubscribe.

5. California privacy rights

If you are a California resident, you may have rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), as amended by the CPRA, including the right to know, delete, and correct personal information, and to opt out of “sale” or “sharing” (we do not sell personal information). To exercise rights, contact privacy@orator.gg. We will verify requests as required by law. You may designate an authorized agent to submit requests on your behalf.

Notice at collection. We collect the categories described in Section 1 for the purposes in Section 2. We retain information as long as needed to provide the Services and as described in our retention practices.

6. Children

The Services are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, contact us and we will take steps to delete it.

8. Security

We use administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect personal information. No method of transmission or storage is fully secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. International users

We are based in the United States and process information in the U.S. and wherever our service providers operate. By using the Services, you consent to transfer and processing in those locations, which may have different data protection laws than your country.

10. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post changes on this page and update the “Last updated” date. Material changes may be communicated through the Services or by email where appropriate.
